Proper Skin Care Includes A Healthy Diet

No amount of purchased skin care products can impact your dermis more than your diet. What you consume as foodstuffs is crucial to the rejuvenation of your skin. Without proper nourishment, the dermis will degrade, losing elasticity and suppleness. As we age, from birth through our senior years, the nutrients we imbibe fuel our bodies. For proper growth, vitalization and rejuvenation, your diet plays an important role in your body’s ability to heal itself. The recommendations below will help you incorporate good nutrition into your daily skin care routine and lifestyle.

Hydration - Because our bodies are made up mostly of water, staying hydrated is one of the best ways to keep your skin healthy. Most experts agree that everyone should consume at least six to eight glasses of water a day. Beverages containing caffeine should be avoided because they act as diuretics, which eliminate fluids from your system. If you are extremely active or during periods of peak exertion, sports beverages will help balance electrolytes. Just ensure the sports beverage is not laden with sugar or caffeine. Balancing electrolytes with sports beverages is recommended for people active in sport or during periods of exertion, but make sure they don’t contain sugar or caffeine.

Antioxidants - these help our bodies grow and regenerate, and  help fight ‘free radicals’ that our skin is exposed to. Fresh fruit and vegetables are the best source of antioxidants. The brightly colored skins of fruits and veggies contain myriads of these antioxidants, so don’t peel your apples! Raw or slightly blanched items are best, as cooking depletes the levels of antioxidants in food.

Well-balanced Diet - Your body, just like an automobile, needs the right fuel to make it work properly. Roller coaster weight gain is unhealthy for your body and your skin, as weight gain and subsequent loss takes its toll on your organs and your dermis. Try to keep to a healthy weight, or lose weight gradually to prevent skin stretching when you add on the pounds, then wrinkling when you lose it again. A healthy diet and lifestyle will keep your skin healthy.

Vitamins and Minerals - The FDA recommends a specific daily requirement for various vitamins and minerals that can be difficult to obtain through food alone. A multi-vitamin taken daily can help to supplement your diet and ensure you are getting all the nutrients you need. A multi vitamin does not replace proper nutrition though, and you should eat at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables, 3 or more ounces of wholegrain products and 3 cups of low-fat dairy products each day. A healthy diet will be visible in your healthy, glowing skin.
